Mosaic for Montrose LandxSea Film Festival

A collaboration with Montrose pottery studio Clay Half resulted in a mosaic artwork depicting the nearby Scurdie Ness lighthouse, created in part with members of the public at the Montrose LandxSea Film Festival. In line with the Festival's aims of promoting awareness of sustainability and environmental issues, materials for the mosaic were almost entirely recycled, using sea glass and ceramics from the beach and pottery from local makers in Angus.
Visitors at the Festival were invited to stick pieces of glass or ceramic with PVA glue onto a drawn design of the lighthouse on wood. Most of the pieces were curved or jagged in form and resulted in an irregular but animated surface. The mosaic will be finished for a future exhibition.
Alongside the mosaic, magnets made from local red earthenware clay were made. The clay was harvested in Montrose and had to be cleaned before being sculpted into seals and combined with text on white earthenware commercial clay.
